This month in the spotlight is Jennifer Davis, Remittance Processor II, from our department of Billing and Collection. The Billing and Collection department is in charge of making sure the employer pays the contributions for the member benefits. In addition to billing the employer, this department also processes the employer contributions for eligible members.
Jennifer is in charge of reviewing employer accounts and employer contribution records  to verify that the employer is on time with their monthly contributions.  She is in charge of processing payment from the employers as well as making changes to the member employee record.  Jennifer advises our 32BJ members to have a proactive roll in their work place.  It is essential that the member always provides the employer with correct personal documents, should always report  any changes made to their personal information and to always make sure that the employer reports these changes to the funds so their benefits will not be affected.

The hundreds of 32BJ members who work as window cleaners do dangerous work.

In order to ensure that window cleaners’ work is as safe as possible, the Thomas Shortman Training Fund offers safety training both to apprentices and to journeypersons.  Recently there was a window cleaning tragedy that took the life of a 32 BJ member. This comes on the heels of several other accidents. The Union and the Thomas Shortman Training Fund are working to review the window cleaner course curriculum to ensure it includes the latest safety updates.

The Training Fund operates the New York State Department of Labor Certified Apprenticeship Program for Window Cleaners. This program combines 216 hours of classroom and 3,000 on the job training hours to provide students with the skills and knowledge of safety procedures necessary to operate in this highly specialized industry.  At this time 32 apprentices are enrolled in the program.

The Fund also provides New York City Department of Buildings Suspended Scaffold Safety Training and Hazard Awareness classes for the 660 journeyperson window cleaners covered by 32BJ.

To read the letter President Mike Fishman sent to the window cleaner members about last month’s tragedy and the work the union is planning to prevent future accidents click here. To view the Window Cleaner Safety Checklist click here.
