Walk to Beat the Clock!  Why? Because…Timing is Everything!

WHAT & WHERE: Walk to Beat the Clock for HPV/Cervical Cancer Prevention and Awareness

This 4K walkathon is a four-hour outdoor event scheduled to take place at Carl Schurz Park, a city gem and the site of Gracie Mansion, at East End Avenue and East 86th Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side; rain or shine.

This very important day, the inaugural NYC Walk to Beat the Clock, follows two successful events in Washington, DC.

Participants will register online for the event at www.tamikaandfriends.org, and they are encouraged to recruit others to participate. The target number of walkers is between 200 – 500 people.

The morning will begin with a ceremony saluting survivors of cervical cancer and a moment of silence for those lost, led by Tamika Felder, Founder and CEO of Tamika and Friends, Inc ® and special guests.

Upon completion of the walk, the group will gather once again around the staging area for sponsor and participant recognition. “Goodie bags”, including educational material as well as donated gifts, will be distributed to participants. The event will close with a musical performance.

WHEN: Saturday, September 13th, 2008 from 8:00am – 12:00pm

After registration and distribution of Beat the Clock T-shirts, the opening ceremony will begin at 8:30am. The actual Walk will begin promptly at 9:15am. This gives participants the opportunity to utilize public transportation to the event site, as well as a little time for “meet and greet” of old friends and new. The closing ceremony will begin at 10:45am

WHY: Education, Prevention and Awareness

This special event provides cervical cancer survivors an opportunity to come together to celebrate life, as well as to educate the uninformed. It is a day when supporters can gather together to donate proceeds and energy to continued education, awareness and most importantly, prevention.

HPV (human papillomavirus) is the leading sexually transmitted disease in the world. Experts have said that all sexually active people will have it at some point in their life, but more than half will have never heard of it. This must end. High-risk HPV strains have been linked to cervical cancer, the second most common cancer in women. Every hour a woman is diagnosed. Every 2.5 hours a woman will die. Through proper screening, it can be almost always100 % preventable. For screening guidelines, visit www.tamikaandfriends.org.

WHO: General Public

All persons are invited to participate in the Walk. ADMISSION: $30. To register, visit www.tamikaandfriends.org, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Proceeds will benefit the education and awareness of cervical cancer and its link to HPV.
